Towing the Line Between Thrifty and Foolish

Ok, I’m going to level with you, 9 times out of 10 if there is a cheaper way to do something, I do that. Unfortunately, driving your car when it needs to be towed is not one of those things. I am a penny pincher from way back. My couponing skills are legendary in Plattsburgh. When it comes to saving money, I don’t play games. I understand not wanting to spend the $75-$100 towing bill, but in reality, the damage done by trying to save yourself some money costs more than that towing bill would have.

The trick to identifying when it’s time to have your vehicle towed, is really paying attention to how your vehicle functions when it’s running normally. Often you become accustomed to how your car drives without even knowing it. Tapping into this knowledge of how your vehicle usually performs and your senses to decide if your vehicle is safe to drive or not is a crucial skill. Being in tune with smells, how it performs, seeing any unusual smoke or leaking of fluids under the car, or any new and loud sounds created by the vehicle, can be a good indicator of whether a vehicle needs towing or not.

Warnings to watch, listen and look for:

  • Check Engine Light is flashing.
  • The vehicle is overheating according to the temperature gauge or sudden drop on the gauge.
  • Oil Level or Oil Pressure light is illuminated.
  • Smoke is coming out from under the hood or out the tailpipe.
  • The vehicle has a burning smell.
  • The smell of fuel while the vehicle is either running or not.
  • Brakes that make a very loud grinding noise either while driving or when applied.
  • Rotational noise while the vehicle is moving, that gets louder with increased RPMs or road speed.
  • Loud noise under the hood while the engine is running, like knocking, whirring or screeching.
  • Vehicle runs poorly, misfiring, backfiring, stalling at stops, no power when accelerating.
  • Sudden loss of fluid like coolant, oil, power steering or brake fluid that can be seen around the vehicle.

If one of these key indicators happens, it is likely that something is wrong and your vehicle may not be safe. Trying to drive the vehicle may not be safe, so it doesn’t hurt to have someone from the DELLA Kia in Plattsburgh check your vehicle out just in case. There is nothing wrong with relying on the trusted specialists at Della Kia of Plattsburgh for your vehicle’s well-being, but it’s always good to know how your vehicle typically operates, and the difference between its normal sounds its unusual and questionable sounds.

When in doubt it’s better to be safe than sorry. I really dislike having to pay a big bill to get my vehicle to the service center, but I dislike wasting money much much more. So get familiar with your vehicles, friends. It’s information worth having.

Packing Tips For The Indecisive

So this weekend my friends and I going on my first road trip of the season! We are super excited to get going and have a little adventure now that the sun is out and the breeze is warm. Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve gone on an adventure, but I am a notoriously indecisive packer. I don’t know what I’m going to need! What if I need something and I didn’t remember to pack it?! I am someone who desperately needs to know that I am prepared for any situation. This, unfortunately, translates to I end up having an unreasonable number of bags for a 3-day adventure.

This time around I have enlisted the help of 2 of my friends to help me pack the essentials. The trouble is, everything seems to be essential to me. I blame my mother for signing me up for the girl scouts. As far as I can tell, that’s the root of my need to be prepared for any situation. Anyway, I have been limited to a small duffle bag and 1 backpack! THAT’S IT! How am I supposed to pack everything we need in 2 dinky little bags?! It’s just not possible. Or so I thought!

Upon arrival, my friends handed me a list of the things that they consider “essentials”. It immediately became apparent that our ideas of “essential” are very different. Below is the list of top 10 essential road trip supplies:

  1. Water bottle- Hydration is no joke friends. If you want to adventure you need to do it right!
  2. Snacks- Duh. Is it even really a road trip if you aren’t eating food that completely destroys you 2-week healthy eating streak? I didn’t think so!
  3. Music – Spotify, iTunes, CD, Sirius Radio, does not matter the media platform, music is essential to the road trip experience and FORTUNATELY does not take up space, so you can bring as much as you want. Unless it’s CDs, then you are limited to 3.
  4. Plastic bag- With all the snacks you’ll be eating
  5. GPS- Everyone has phones or even cars like the incredible 2017 Kia Sorento which has navigation technology built in, but let’s be real. Things happen, sometimes you forget your car charger, or drive a vehicle that isn’t quite that advanced and then your phone dies and NOW YOU CAN’T GET HOME. So have a backup plan.
  6. Car Charger- Yah, don’t forget that.
  7. Pillows- Perhaps your car isn’t as plush as the 2017 Kia Sportage and you need a little extra cushion to make your ride more comfortable. Pillows will be your best friend.
  8. Blankets – Not all cars have individual climate control like the 2017 Kia Soul EV, so you may need a blanket or two to keep you warm when that 1 friend DEMANDS that the be meat locker cold at all times.
  9. 2 changes of daytime clothes, 1 pair of pjs, Sweatshirt, toiletries (This only applies if you are going on an overnight adventure. If you aren’t, this MIGHT be overkill.)
  10. Tissues- I always forget how important they are, but as it is allergy season, it’s best to keep them in the car at all times!

Hopefully, this list was helpful to my fellow indecisive packers. You don’t need to bring EVERYTHING to be prepared, just make sure you bring the essentials. If all else fails, you’ll be with your friends, and that’s all that really matters.

Broke and Lazy, Gas Station Edition

Typically I’ll do what I have to do to make sure things go smoothly and as they should, but on occasion, the lazy part of my soul takes over and I end up making foolish mistakes. On more than one occasion, in an effort to not have to leave the blissful comfort of my couch I have leaned slightly too far to grab the remote and promptly landed on my face. My middle name is not grace, guys, and I never claimed to be able to defy gravity, but at the time it felt like the right thing to do. In the same way, my lazy lazy heart paired with my SUPER empty bank account drove me to try to get as much gas as is physically possible when the prices are low.

Honestly, I don’t have the energy to take a billion trips to the gas station, especially in the middle of an awesome road trip, so I fill that sucker up to the tippy top. When I’m jamming out to Beyonce I WILL NOT be disturbed, especially by a little dashboard light telling me to put gas in my car. Consequently, I have developed a somewhat bad habit of overfilling my tank in an effort to minimize the disruption of Queen Bey. How does one do that when the pump automatically shuts off, you might ask? WELL, once the pump shuts off for the first time I squeeze the handle again until it clicks off again. Naturally, I thought I was being brilliant and thrifty. As it turns out I am not a car wizard and should 100% NOT do that to my car. Here are some reasons why:

  1. There are gas AND gas vapors inside your gas tank. The gas expands, especially when it is hot out. As the gas expands it needs to go somewhere. The gas rises and the vapors are forced out of the tank and into the emission system of your car. Parts of the emission system collect and store gas vapors to be burned in the engine later. If you top off and there is too much gas in the tank, as it expands liquid gas is forced into the emission system which is only designed for gas vapors. This can cause your check engine light to come on, your car to run poorly, and/or you pollute the air more with your exhaust. You will need to replace any damaged parts of the emissions system. Specifically, something called the charcoal canister.
  2. A lot of gas pumps are designed to feed gas into their pumps to prevent vapors from escaping into the air and contributing to air pollution. Any additional gas you try to pump into your tank may be drawn into the vapor line and fed back into the pump. Causing you to pay for gas that was returned to the station. Anytime you top off you created a great possibility of gas spilling on the ground and vapor releasing into the air. Very bad for the environment.

So while your bargain savvy and lazy brain tell you “you can definitely fit more into that tank!” In the long run, it’s really not worth it. Like really not worth it, because I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty broke and I am not super into wasting money OR causing more damage to our already jacked up environment. It’s time for me to take one for the team and stop taking short cuts. So make the most out of your gas with an amazing vehicle from Della Kia of Plattsburgh!

Never Doubt The Possibilities Of A Kia

Doubt can be a powerful force. Just a little bit of doubt can be enough to keep us from having confidence in what we do and stop us from trying something out of fear of failure. We have all had those moments where we wonder if we are going to get it right or if we are going to fall short and, more often than not, we allow that little bit of doubt to stop us from taking that leap. The power of doubt and its ability to affect your everyday life is the theme of the latest Kia advertisement starring NBA All-Star Lebron James. In the 70-second spot titled “Rain” James compares doubt to rain.

It only takes a little bit of rain to prevent you from wanting to go outside just like it only takes a little bit of doubt to get you to change your mind and start to feel as though you can’t do it. However, he discusses how he never lets doubt get in his way of pursuing his dreams and how you can’t be afraid to play in the rain.

This theme of #doubtnomore, is a powerful one and Kia is looking to show that when you choose to ignore doubt amazing things can happen, you just have to believe in yourself and what you are capable of putting out there.

See the full spot below and stop by DELLA Kia to take a test drive in a brand new Kia and see that there is no doubt when you are behind the wheel of one of these models.
